    Founded in 1898, the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) was established by 37 dedicated lumbermen in Chicago, who all came together to create uniform standards for the grading and trading of hardwood lumber. Today, NHLA continues to serve our membership as well as the broader hardwood lumber consumer base as the foremost authority in the hardwood industry, with a mission to represent the entire hardwood supply chain at all levels of production.

    The history of Rare Woods takes us back to the early 1980’s in Cape Town South Africa where founder, Rory Wood set out on a lifelong quest to supply craftsmen with beautiful woods from around the world. Back then, local cabinet makers had to accept the 6 basic woods available.  Fast forward 40 years to the present day where they now have access to the 150 different species that Rare Woods SA currently offers.
