I've recently been commissioned to create the iconic red spoon for Gelato Fiasco of Brunswick, Maine for their C(t)SA Gift Subscription. I was tasked with reproducing their flagship spoon at size that I've never attempted before. At only 5-inches long and a 3/4 blade, with so little surface to work, it has proven to be a challenge to make. After prototyping several options, it was decided to create a spoon in natural wood rather then staining with a dye or paint. The natural wood has a feel and beauty that dye's or paint's just can't match. This spoon will last you a lifetime of gelato and what's best is that it was individually made by hand by me in my woodworking studio. Each one is unique and features the "GF" symbol hand-engraved on the top side of the handle. After this project, I think my studio will be investing in a laser machine to compete other custom works and other product branding opportunities, but until then I'll be engraving by hand. Hand engraving gives a look that machines can't match. I might be the only spoon maker in the world that hand engraves onto kitchenware.
